Soul of a Nation: Jazz is the Teacher, Funk is the Preacher is a powerful collection of Black Power-era radical jazz, street funk, and proto-rap (1969-75).
This is Soul Jazz Records' second Soul of a Nation album, and it coincides with the exhibition Soul of a Nation - Art in the Age of Black Power.
The album includes a number of significant and ground-breaking African-American artists - The Art Ensemble of Chicago, Don Cherry, Funkadelic, Gil Scott-Heron, and others - as well as a slew of lesser-known artists who, in the early 1970s, were exploring new Afro-centric polyrhythmical musical styles - radical jazz, street funk, and proto-rap - while also exploring the Black Power and civil rights movements.
