Release date: 24-03-2015 (Originally released in 1978)

2015 EU reissue on 180g  LP-Easter is an album by the Patti Smith Group, released in March 1978. Produced by Jimmy Iovine, it is regarded as the group's commercial breakthrough, owing to the success of the single, "Because the Night" (co-written by Bruce Springsteen and Smith), which reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 in the UK. Easter incorporated a diversity of musical styles, though still including classic rock and roll ("25th Floor/High on Rebellion", "Rock N Roll Nigger"), folk ("Ghost Dance"), spoken word ("Babelogue") and pop music ("Because the Night"). The album was highly acclaimed upon its release. Writing in Rolling Stone, Dave Marsh called the album "transcendent and fulfilled."

Easter is the first record Patti Smith recorded after the year-and-a-half break that was caused by her fall from a stage in January 1977. The album is produced by Bruce Springsteen associate Jimmy Iovine and was Smith's most commercial-sounding effort yet and, due to the inclusion of Springsteen's "Because The Night" (with Smith's revised lyrics), a Top Ten hit.

Easter incorporated a diversity of musical styles, including classic rock and roll, folk, spoken word and pop music. The album turned out to be the best compromise Smith achieved between her artistic and commercial aspirations.

Patti Smith cowrote her first big hit, "Because the Night," with Bruce Springsteen, and that track was the force behind this album's ascent of the U.S. Top 40. Never fully departing from her punk-poetess roots, Easter was nonetheless produced by hit maker Jimmy Iovine, resulting in a more accessible overall sound than her earlier work. Her vocal gymnastics and dramatic rock & roll sensibilities threw sparks in every direction, with the vitriolic "Rock N Roll Nigger" and the anthemic "Till Victory" further paving the way for punks and women rockers everywhere. Churchly keyboards and huge drums drive Smith's quest for "a reason to live" on the religiously inquisitive "Privilege" and she's unabashedly sexy on the raunchy "25th Floor." A great work all around. --Lorry Fleming
