"Boz Scaggs", not to be confused with the 1965 LP early birth "Boz" released by Polydor, is the first album in which the producers simply did everything right. Perhaps the most important maker of all is guitar legend Duane Allman, who piloted the highly talented Scaggs to Alabama's Muscle Shoals Sound Studios. There, top-class musicians, as well as those who had been tried and tested in soul, were waiting for him, playing as a house band alongside Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett. This noble combo gets going immediately and offers in the bluesy "I'm Easy" a rich brass section, fired by powerful bass lines and a full-toned background. Inspired by the tone of the blues, Scaggs sings a series of soulful songs, in sometimes spare, always well-measured and finely tuned instrumentation. Sometimes the organ whispers in the singer's ear ("I'll Be Long Gone"), then finely tuned voices announce themselves from offstage ("Another Day"). And down-to-earth warm waves of slide guitar and joyous fiddling also get going in the strophic country song "Now You're Gone."
Highlights of the album are the yodeled hobo song "Waiting For A Train" and the blues tune "Loan Me A Dime," staged as a tour de force. But before Rolling Stone magazine could name the best-selling track one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, a new crisp mix was needed in 1978. Scaggs demanded it for quality reasons. This remix was followed by nix for a long time. Now it is available on freshly cut vinyl for the first time since 1978.
