2018 EU reissue vinyl 2LP - featuring Pablo Casals on cello and Rudolf Serkin on piano.
Pablo Casals’ (1876-1973) recordings of Beethoven’s complete music for cello and piano with that other musical legend, the American (but Hungarian born and educated in Vienna) pianist Rudolf Serkin. These were recorded at the Prades Festival concerts between 1951 and 1953, and now and then you will hear the great man Casals grunt as he attacks a phrase. Casals was 76 in 1952, and his bow arm was in less than perfect control but this performance is classic.
Sonatas Nos. 1,3,4,5 recorded in France at the Casals Festival in Prades in 1951; sonata No. 2 recorded in France at the Casals Festival in Perpignan in 1951.
