Cassidy’s poignant rendition of Sandy Denny’s “Who Knows Where the Time Goes” was recorded live at The Maryland Inn, while “You’ve Changed,” the jazz standard most associated with Billie Holiday, came from the same sessions that yielded Cassidy’s 1996 recording Live At Blues Alley. Similarly, her recording of “Fever” is taken from the sessions for The Other Side, the duet album she made with Washington’s “king of go-go” Chuck Brown in 1992. Rounding out Imagine are “Still Not Ready,” written by Eva’s friend pianist Chris Izzi, and “I Can Only Be Me,” a song Stevie Wonder wrote (but never recorded) for the soundtrack of the Spike Lee film, School Daze.

Blix Street Records has announced the release of five seminal Eva Cassidy albums on 180g vinyl including her definitive collection, Songbird (1998), unavailable on the format for years, and equally as compelling offerings, Time After Time (2000), Imagine (2000), American Tune (2003) and Somewhere (2008), which will be available on vinyl for the very first time.


"Definitions,” wrote Los Angeles Times critic Don Heckman, “become virtually useless to describe the singing of Eva Cassidy.” The career of the gifted and acclaimed vocalist has likewise defied description and easy analysis. Her eclectic tastes – everything from folk and country to jazz, standards, blues, rock and pop - made Eva hard to pigeon-hole, and her lack of exposure beyond her native Washington, D.C. kept her profile low during her lifetime.

On the 17th of September 1996 a young woman, accompanied by a few dozen family and friends, attended her own tribute concert in a small club in the Washington, DC area. Transcending the effects of chemo-therapy and morphine in that moment, the singer abandoned her walker and was helped onto the stage for what would be her final performance, What a Wonderful World. A few weeks later Eva Cassidy passed away, having been diagnosed with melanoma months earlier.

Refusing to bend her music to the industry's conventions and expectations, Eva was known only within the DC area during her lifetime. She left behind one live album, a duet album, and various studio demos and live recordings. In these intervening 16 years, Eva's music has proven timeless and universal. Crossing all boundaries – musical, cultural, geographical – her voice survived and is finding new listeners every day in every corner of the earth.

Released on the eve of what would have been her 50th birthday these twenty performances document Eva Cassidy's musical legacy for the ages.
